Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD)

Our lymphatic system is the frontline of our body's ability to fight disease and infection. It works as a waste disposal unit, transporting toxins, bacteria, excess fluid and metabolic wastes produced by our cells, out of our bodies. It also produces immuno-competent cells which are involved in fighting infection.

Using specific massage techniques with slow movements, specific direction and very light pressure, it assists our body to refresh and rejuvenate its fluid. It is not a muscular massage, it works superficially as 70% of the lymph fluid is found there. It encourages the lymphatic system to absorb and transport lymph more effectively. Our body contains 10L of lymph, compared to only 3.5-5L of blood. In one day, only 1.5-2L of lymph fluid travels through the body. Following a MLD, the amount of lymph travelling through the body increases to 10-20L for up to 3 days, as well as increasing by 20% the production of immuno-competent cells.

+ Is MLD covered by my insurance?

MLD is performed by our trained Registered Massage Therapists and would be billed as such. If you are worried about coverage be sure to check your massage therapy coverage with your unique insurance plan. Some plans do require a prescription.

+ DO I HAVE TO GET UNDRESSED FOR THIS TREATMENT?

Like remedial massage, your therapist can work around your comfort level, from completely clothed to completely unclothed. You are always covered with a sheet, which will be folded back securely when working on a specific area. If you prefer to remain clothed or partly clothed, it is important to wear loose items of clothing, primarily undergarments.

+ Who can benefit from MLD?

Almost everybody can benefit from MLD treatments. On its own, it boosts your immune system and natural immune response. It is highly recommended pre and post surgery to assist with the healing process and reduce swelling, bruising and inflammation. It can also help manage migraines, sinus issues, digestive issues and reproductive conditions.

+ Which health conditions would prevent me from receiving an MLD treatment?

If you are actively suffering from a bacterial or viral infection, your treatment will be postponed. Some other heart and kidney conditions, as well as malignant tumours would be a case-by-case assessment. Most of those conditions would require clearance from your health care provider for MLD specifically. Contacting the clinic is always a great way to ensure this treatment is safe for your specific health condition or past health history.
